#MeToo movement gained a lot of popularity during the Harvey Weinstein case. Since then Hollywood has seen many assaulters convicted of their actions, including popular names like Bill Cosby. Although India did participate in the first wave of #MeToo revolution, the second wave is definitely stronger. I am not sure how much storm is this capable of creating in real life, but it sure is causing a lot of casual banter in social situations. I welcome this banter. At least people are talking about it, isn’t that something? As opposed to taking it for granted that such things “happen”. My post is about logically addressing some of those who feel, not unlike President Trump himself, that #metoo is scary, “for the boys”
#1 Scary time for the boys!
First things first, are you an adult male, are you feeling scared and insecure in dealing with people of a certain gender? WELCOME TO THE CLUB. We have lived here since time immemorial. We have been taught to be on the self-defense mode all the time. Imagine feeling scared while playing, going to school, talking to friendly uncles, riding on a bus, going to a party, going for math classes, befriending a guy, talking to a male colleague, entering our male boss’s cabin, going for drinks to a friend’s house, going to a crowded concert…. Literally every single minute of our day, there is a thought that goes on… “Protect yourself”. Imagine that?
#2 False #MeToo Allegations
You fear that someone might “tweet” or post something that might not be true and might malign your image. Chetan Bhagat is surely feeling the pinch of it. (Is it fake? who knows!) Well.. happens to us all the time. Whenever a person has felt vindictive of a woman, all they needed to do was indicate something bad about her “character”. That was enough to shun a person from the society, in high schools, in colleges.. from communities. At the same time, the man in question is usually consoled that they fell prey to “her”. Now that some males are being questioned publicly, you are losing your shit?! I am not saying Fake MeToo is correct, all I am asking is, deal with it. Do not question the authenticity of the revolution due to a handful of Fakes.
#3 What good will #Metoo do?
Incredible, but true. Many people have this question. Why does it matter if I share my story publicly, will that change anything that happened in the past. No, it won’t. Everyone will still live with the trauma of what happened, but this brings those women forward, together in solidarity. It is not something that “happens”. It is a crime. Sexually harassing, abusing, assaulting anyone is Not OK. This sends a strong message to our future generation, telling them, “Do not keep quiet”. Protest if something wrong happens to you. Our parents taught us wrong. They told us to hide beneath the covers when something happened. And behold…. we have an entire generation of women who live in fear, and shame. We definitely do not want that for our next generation. Let us acknowledge that #Metoo is a revolution. It is in the nature of Revolution to start off as a crazy idea… people seldom believe in it. But with the right cause, it always leads to a much bigger social reform. The human race has done that before. I am certain we will do it again.
“Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. ” – Martin Luther King.
