More and more organizations today are realizing the importance of continuous learning. Research has shown that training and learning environment in the workplace improves employee motivation. So, there are companies that consider employee’s career goals, and enable them, so that they can retain the best. However, few organizations have totally aced this. They set the trend of Corporate Universities. 

Corporate Universities are actual schools within an organization, where employees can take courses, appear for exams, and receive Degrees. Most of these Degrees are recognized in the market, and increase the employee’s market value. 

Here are some of the leading organizations whose Corporate Universities stand out from the rest:

Hamburger University

This university, founded in 1961, is the global center of excellence for McDonald’s operation training and leadership. Fred Turner, McDonald’s former Chairman, and Ray Kroc’s first grill man, founded Hamburger University in the basement of a McDonald’s restaurant, in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Hamburger University’s first class of 15 students graduated on February 24, 1961. Today, more than 7,500 students attend Hamburger University each year. Since 1961, more than 80,000 restaurant managers, mid-managers and owner/operators have graduated from this facility.

GE Crotonville

GE has always been in the forefront of organization development. Jack Welch is known in Corporate history, as a pioneer and thought leader, in the area of Employee Growth and Development. In 1956, Ralph Cordiner, President of GE, opened its first corporate university at Crotonville, with the objective of having control over a pipeline of future managers. In fact, one of the students from the first ever course in Crotonville, Reginald Jones, went on to become the CEO of GE. What started in Crotonville, is now spread across 198 locations, over 50 countries. GE offers over 1800 courses in leading technological formats. Just in the year 2013 for example, they educated 40,000 employees and 3000 customers!

Apple University

Whenever we talk about something cutting edge, we cannot omit Apple from that list. Steve Jobs established Apple University in 2008. Located in Cupertino, California, this university is said to have trapezoid classrooms. This corporate university is pretty secretive, and none of their materials are available publicly. Faculty members include professors from universities like Yale, Harvard, the University of California-Berkeley, Stanford, and M.I.T. Some of the faculty continue to hold positions at their schools while also working for Apple.[6]

Aditya Birla Group

Recently, Aditya Birla Group made news, when they won the Best Corporate University – Culture and Brand: Gold Award from Global Council of Corporate Universities. They partner with GlobalNXT university to hire and create managers and leaders for their group of organizations. They adopted the concept of e-MBA, which is hugely popular across the globe.
